The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
