RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
