At least 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
